POSITION OVERVIEW

  • Supports the production process of video, animation and images for multiple parallel projects
  • Assist the Producer in post production timelines and budgets as well as resource allocation for concurrent projects
  • Coordinate project kickoff and asset handoff from creative to the production artists, and track the assets through the post production process
  • Assists editors, graphic artists, motion designers, and VFX artists to produce client-facing material and final deliverables on schedule
  • Works directly under the Production, Creative, and Brand Management teams to manage approvals and ensure efficient workflow and delivery
  • Follows up proactively with the appropriate team deadlines by setting daily priorities and distributing status updates

RESPONSIBILITIES

Will include but are not limited to:

  • Take notes in meetings and then send to the producer afterwards
  • Check in with artists every morning to make sure they are not having any issues with their machines and know what they are working on
  • Prepare artists for briefing; send paths to latest work and any applicable documents for artists to review prior to Director and/or Lead briefing them
  • Download any files or assets sent by the agency and organizing them in the server
  • Schedule meetings for the producer and team in google calendar such as briefings and dailies
  • Communicate with remote artists to make sure they stay on schedule and have what they need
  • Set up briefings and making sure files are downloaded and saved to the correct server folders
  • Request all source files after a project ends and facilitate with the project wrap protocol
  • Coordinate with the Producer on postings

EXPERIENCE

  • 1-2 years experience working in commercial production
  • Strong understanding of the 2D & 3D pipeline and process
  • Ability to work on multiple projects and coordinate with the creative and production teams
  • Experience with scheduling, budgeting and actualizing
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of CETA iCFM and Shotgrid software is a plus

Job Description

The Character Artist's primary responsibilities revolve around creating highly detailed character and creature assets for Game Cinematic and Commercial projects. Tasks range from crafting stylized characters to anatomically realistic humans and creatures, including facial modeling, FACS blendshapes, sculpting, retopology, texturing, and look development. The Character Artist collaborates with the Assets team in LA and the teams in India to ensure the sharing of knowledge, techniques, and workflows. There is a continuous emphasis on pushing for increased artistic and technical quality/expertise within a collaborative team, which is highly valued and encouraged.

The Character Artist possesses expertise, practices, and techniques for generating clean and efficient geometry suitable for various target outputs (e.g., rigging, simulation, photorealistic rendering, as well as real-time game engines). Collaboration with Asset Leads, Assets Department Supervisors, CG Supervisors, and VFX Supervisors is essential to ensure proper asset creation within the studio pipeline and meeting the specific needs of projects and clients. Continued collaboration with other department supervisors on workflows and pipeline is also expected.

The Role

The CFX TD will collaborate closely with our CG Supervisors, VFX Supervisors, Animation Leads, and other fellow artists and Production to develop high-quality CFX setups for Game Cinematics and Commercial VFX projects. Assets will encompass a variety, from stylized or photoreal human characters with a combination of hair, cloth, and skin interaction to creatures featuring muscle/skin simulation, feathers, and fur. Candidates should be prepared to enhance and streamline existing CFX workflows, primarily using Houdini for hair/cloth and skin simulation. They will create setups that can be applied and executed across multiple shots in large projects.

The CFX TD will engage in collaboration with Mill artists and supervisors globally, focusing on LA projects with LA Supervisors and maintaining communication with the Mill teams in India.

This role directly reports to the Heads of CG at the Mill LA. Additionally, they will closely collaborate with the Mill’s India office when handling extensive projects, taking on the role of lead artist and/or supervisor depending on the project's scale. Proficiency in using a VFX Production Pipeline, providing constructive notes, and receiving internal and external feedback is crucial.

Experience with real-time engines is highly desirable, specifically in Unreal Engine, Unity, and Frostbite.

This may involve blueprinting, research/troubleshooting, and learning new plugins in the engine. Experience in working with Blueprints, Niagara/Chaos (FX, cloth, flesh, muscles), UE rigging solutions, layout, and scene assembly is necessary to fulfill the role.
